Q: How many people can you draw per hour?
A: I am known as the fastest artist working in the New England area, generally drawing between 20 and 25 people per hour in my black brush line “head shot” style. I am the recipient of an award from the International Society of Caricature Artists (formerly The National Caricaturist's Network) for speed. In color, with full hobby or sport depicted, my output is usually 9-10 per hour.
Q: What is the cost to hire a party caricaturist?
A: A two hour event within 30 miles of the Greater Boston area usually runs about $275. We offer a discount on multiple artists.
We do travel all over, we do events in New England and beyond, and we would be happy to discuss a price with you taking your location and other factors into account. At an additional small fee, we can also offer customized touches, such as preprinted personalized paper as a memento of the special occasion, or to reinforce your logo for branding purposes at a corporate event.
Q: I would like to have caricature at my event, but don't want it to look mean or grotesque and insult my guests. What does your party work look like?
A: I call my party work “painless caricature”. I’m there to entertain and amuse your guests. The point is not just to do a drawing, but to encourage the next subjects to sit down as well.
Q: How far in advance are you booked?
A: Call us as soon as you are considering booking, and we will be able to help you plan, and will block out time for you once you have a firm date. Parties tend to cluster on the same dates in any given calendar year so the sooner you know, the better, but call us even if it's "last-minute" and if it's at all possible, we will be there!
Q: What if I have a large crowd?
A: I can provide as many artists as you will likely need, according to your budget. Consider choosing black and white versus color portraits when you have a lot of people expected, which can more than double our hourly output.
Q: Do you draw at children’s parties?
A: From christenings, birthdays, sleepovers, birthday parties, Bar and Bat Mitzvah parties and graduation parties, we have done it all.
Q: What do I need to provide?
A: We need a square or rectangular table or desk of average height, 3 chairs and access to an electrical outlet. In a home, this could be part of a dining room or kitchen table.
Q: How do I book you for event?
A: Call me at the business line, 978-927-8057, email me jgdoherty@comcast.net, or click the mail button on this site for contact questions. After that, I will send a bid by email or snail mail if you prefer.
Q: What size paper do you draw on? What kind of materials?
A: Traditionally, I draw on 8 1/2"x 11" “index board” card stock. I use a brush pen as my main line and colored pencil leads for shade and colors depending on the event. But the “Etcetera” in our name says we can be creative, so call us with your needs and we will come up with a plan to make your party pop!
Q: What’s new in Caricature entertainment?
A: Our newest sensation is something that entertains a room full of people, we arrive with a small flat screen TV, a printer and draw your guests on an iPad, print out a take-home glossy 5”x7” image, and later email you the originals to use. All the while, guests can see the drawings in progress and “ooh and ah.” This has been particularly popular with our corporate clients at shows, conventions and expositions to draw traffic to the booth.
Q: Do you provide frames or mattes?
A: We can provide these by special arrangement. We do provide a protective plastic bag for each drawing.
Q: How do you handle lines of people waiting to be drawn? Do you use lists or numbers?
A: I provide a set of carnival tickets, this has proven to be the best way to accommodate your guests in an orderly way (and spare your guests from waiting in a long line), and also maximize the time spent drawing at the event.
Q: Do you only do live entertainment? I would like to give a caricature as a surprise from a photo.
A: In-studio art is a big part of our business. We can work from your photos scanned in and sent electronically or from prints, the more and better the photos, the better the results! We do Sign-In Boards featuring the person/couple with hobbies, sports, etc. featured, and provide you with an illustrated board mounted on foam core, ribbons and colored pens for signatures. We do also retirement, birthday, realistic non-caricature style portraits from photos in sizes range from “small” to “all.” You name it, we can do it. Or if you need ideas, call and tell us about the situation and we can help you figure out how to honor and surprise your loved one, boss, or colleague.
