A Beatle related drawing a week for a year...

"There's nothing you can do that can't be done"...but this is something I can do. I'm a big Beatle fan, and a working caricaturist for thirty years. I thought a nice way to combine the two is to steal a page from "Julie & Julia" and commit to doing one new image related to the Beatles per week for the next year. I'm not doing one a day in strict homage, as I don't think I could keep that pace for the next 365 days. 52 pieces of art seems more realistic, and might allow for more time intensive media occasionally (painting, etc.) , though I expect most of the images will be ink on paper. There will also be non Beatle drawings here on the blog, and my definition of "Beatles related" is elastic (if not fully Plastic Ono;-). So, key people and family members outside the Fab Four will appear.

In some rare instances, I may work digitally which means there will be no "original" per se, but apart from that, most of these images will be available for purchase. Email me if you are interested, and comment at will.

The Dark Horse

GHf.jpg

George, or "Carl" Harrison, (as he once billed himself in tribute to his idol Carl Perkins), was the "Rodney Dangerfield" of the Beatles, often getting "no respect at all" when it came time to decide whose songs would be on the album.

He had the misfortune to be in a band with the two greatest songwriters of the 20th century; this was also his great good fortune.  So it goes.

Something different for a Beatle birthday: today, Happiness is Warm Brush. Though I often work with a brushpen, today, I'm posting a full painting, done in gouache on board.

Hare Krishna, Hari Georgeson, wherever ye may be. Happy Birthday to you.

Oh, Yoko!

Born February 18th, 1933, savior of John Lennon or doom to the Beatles, or both? No Beatle fan seems to be indifferent on the issue. Recently, I read in Beatle sound engineer Geoff Emerick’s book his statement to the effect that “No one could deny that Yoko had a good effect on John, or that she was a big spur to his creativity.”  (paraphrasing here)

Yoko’s lately (last night & today, in fact) been “getting the band back together” in NYC.

Not the Beatles, but the Plastic Ono Band, including original members Eric Clapton & Klaus Voorman.  She’s also been very helpful to Amnesty International, donating the use of John’s songs for the campaign to end the violence in Darfur:

I've lately been enjoying the show "Lost" on tv, which currently features characters in two different timelines. Some people who died in one are still alive in the other. It made me think of Lennon's wish, stated in the intense Rolling Stone interview, that when he was 64, he'd love to be "living with Yoko in a small cottage off the coast of Ireland, looking back at our scrapbook of madness" (paraphrasing again).

Here's hoping they are, somewhere, in another timeline...;-)

Some Sopranos with your Beatles
Leot.jpgunclejunior2.gifChristopher.jpgHere's a few from My Back Pages, from the greatest show ever put on TV: three guys from the Sopranos. Frank Vincent, who played Phil Leotardo with his "New York ain't happy" face; Dominic Chianese, Uncle Junior, and the great Michael Imperioli as Christophuh.

Ed Sullivan 46TH Anniversary Bloglaunch...

I’m launching this blog on the 46th anniversary of the Beatles American debut on the Ed Sullivan Show, so I thought to launch the project I should draw all four Beatles, and draw them to reflect their appearance around the time of those shows.
John, Paul & Ringo were sourced from the DVD of the Anthology: John singing “Please Mr. Postman” from some old videotape, that suggested the minimalist treatment here; Paul shown at the press conference for the Royal Variety Show in October 63, and Ringo actually in the hotel room before the first Sullivan taping. I found my George source in a photo of him in repose on the set of “A Hard Day’s Night” in Tim Hill’s “Images of the Beatles” (thanks to Debbie D for that lovely gift!).
